Oh, Dang! Bigfoot Stole My Car With My Friend’s Birthday Present Inside – Actual Play + Review

Welcome to another podcast series for The Beer and Pretzel Podcast, your actual play show for everything in the indie RPG world! This week we are highlighting another episode we recorded about half a year ago where we got to play  Oh, Dang! Bigfoot Stole My Car With My Friend’s Birthday Present Inside.

You’re supposed to be heading to a friend’s place for a sweet birthday party. But you stopped to buy a card, and when you came out… oh, dang! Your car is being stolen! And is that Bigfoot at the wheel?! It’s time to go on a wacky road trip and chase that sasquatch down!” 

In our longest-named game to date, The Beer and Pretzel Podcast crew played Oh, Dang! Bigfoot Stole My Car With My Friend’s Birthday Present Inside by Paul Matijevic and is a game about chasing down bigfoot using John Harpers Lasers and Feelings RPG.

Below is our actual play series of us playing the game, where Becky and Carina first established their fan-favorite characters Moonshine and Sammiches, and with Bigfoot stealing a present forcing the gang to chase him down to a Bigfoot museum.  All while the rival road team interferes with their plans…

The Game Masters review of Oh, Dang! Bigfoot Stole My Car With My Friend’s Birthday Present Inside: 

Like Lasers and Feelings the game that inspired it, Oh, Dang! Bigfoot Stole My Car does a great job of utilizing its single-page document to provide a fun one-shot experience, with replay value and enough content to give the GM plenty to work off.

CHARACTER CREATION: The group’s theme is very close to a heist team, with everyone choosing their role at the start which ranges from The Driver or the Face to the Investigator or the Navigator. You pair that with a personality style of your choice (brains, smooth, comedy, etc) and you finish your character’s goal in stopping Bigfoot and what your present was for your friend.  We all were able to make characters super quickly, and everyone was able to make fun and unique characters that fit well within the theme of the game with all the character choices. Small games don’t have to force you to do most of the creative lifting, and this does it well.

GAME MECHANICS: The main stats in this game are PATIENT and RECKLESS.  Depending on the number you chose at the character creation selection which ranges from 2-5, you are aiming to roll under that number in all Patient rolls (staying cool rolls) or above if you are rolling something Reckless. Every roll you have at least one D6, and get more if you are prepared or expertised in the action you are rolling for. Because a single success also adds a complication, players are aiming for two or more successes. In our playthrough where multiple beverages were consumed, the players seemed to easily grasp the mechanics which helped me run the game a lot. I do wonder how the game would change if you inserted a little bit of Honey Heist’s mechanics in having the stats change with every roll. As I could see players only rolling for their better stat if they knew how the game worked before jumping in. There is nothing stopping you from putting a 2 into your main stat, and just trying to roll recklessly with every action, making success a high probability. 

GM “SECTION”: Granted the gm section takes up a small amount of the lower right corner, but plenty is packed in to make any improvised gaming night seem like a fully planned out adventure. Anytime the GM needs to add more to the story, he can roll on the “Bigfoot wants to”, the “Complications” table, the “Bigfoot makes a stop at” sheet, or the “When you finally meet” table. I rolled on each and not only did it make running the game easier, but it was fun being forced to tell a story within the parameters of a plot where Bigfoot had to travel across the state to find his long-distance relationship girlfriend at a Bigfoot convention while being tracked down by a Bigfoot Media Crew.

Oh, Dang! Bigfoot Stole My Car With My Friend’s Birthday Present Inside summary and score: Besides having the most hilarious title of any rpg we’ve played on the podcast, Oh, Dang! Bigfoot Stole My Car is also a joy to play and packs enough information in its single-page document to make it a worthwhile (and free) download to your rpg collection.  9.5/10
