Strange Academy #6

Strange Academy #6 is published by Marvel Comics, written by Skottie Young, art by Humberto Ramos, colors by Edgar Delgado, and letters by Clayton Cowles. While the kids managed to find their missing friend, they have wandered right into the clutches of the Hollow. Now they must desperately hold off their assailants until help can arrive. But do they have the discipline, skill, and raw power to hold off their voracious opponents?

Teaching is a tricky business. While a teacher’s job is first and foremost the education of their students, they also often provide a measure of moral support. Otherwise, the struggle to grow past one’s limitations can become soul crushing. Here though, lies a danger all its own.

In the desire to support their students, teachers run the risk of coddling them. Providing too much support or making studies too easy can give students a false sense of confidence in their abilities. When this confidence is broken, the result can be devastating, even more so if the realization hits in the middle of a magical battle.

Strange Academy #6 opens with various faculty members as they scramble to find their missing charges. While there is no immediate success, hope is not lost as the teachers eventually run into a scared frost giant who points the way to the lost kids.

Meanwhile, those selfsame lost kids struggle to complete their classmate’s rescue, which is proving substantially more difficult than it should be. That is until the realization that the academy has been boosting their powers while they have been studying, effectively making them more powerful on school grounds than they would otherwise be.

But even with their diminished strength, the kids are not defenseless. Some quick thinking and big revelations about the nature of some of their powers can keep the Hollow back for a time. But if the students want to escape, it looks like there may be a high price to pay.

Between the faculty’s multidimensional search for their students and the pitched battle in the swamp, there is a lot to show in Strange Academy #6. Luckily, artist Ramos is able to showcase all the various magical effects in all their power-charged glory while never overwhelming the reader with an overload of special effects.

Just as the art in previous issues has benefitted from Delgado’s brilliant colorwork, the same is true here. Every magical effect, supernaturally fueled explosion, and mind-bending warp to reality effectively springs from the page in no small part due to the gorgeous colors.

Further helping keep the clarity together amidst the storm of magic and battle is Cowles’s steady hand with the letters. Despite the excited exchanges of multiple students within the din of conflict, everything manages to stay clear and easy to follow.

When all is said and done, Strange Academy #6 delivers a high octane tale that is exciting and well delivered. The aftermath of this confrontation is bound to have huge repercussions for both the students as well as the Academy as a whole.

Strange Academy #6 is available on December 9th, wherever comics are sold.
