In Trashed Talk Podcast’s second Mob Movie Monday, we review Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning film The Departed on our podcast. Sit down with us, crack a beer or two, and enjoy our conversation about the Boston themed gangster film.
South Boston cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) goes undercover to infiltrate the organization of gangland chief Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). As Billy gains the mobster’s trust, a career criminal named Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) infiltrates the police department and reports on its activities to his syndicate bosses. When both organizations learn they have a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin must figure out each other’s identities to save their own lives.
Following multiple character storylines, The Departed balances a thin line with its main two roles played by Damon and DiCaprio. Mixing intertwining stories in a way that we get to see both sides (the Boston PD and the mob), from different viewpoints and from two different kinds of “rats”. While Dicaprio is our protagonist, he is a fascinating character as he’s even more flawed than Damon who could be considered the antagonist of the film, in what Dicaprio describes his character as “being in a 24-hour panic attack.
The rest of the supporting cast brings their A-game of course, with Marky Mark Walburg earning an Oscar nomination for his role as Sergeant Dignam, Martin Short, and Alec Baldwin rounding out the supporting roles with Jack Nicholson stealing every scene he’s in.
And while it’s a tad too long, The Departed is another violent masterclass of cinema from Martin Scorsese.
Game of the week: Jedi Fallen Order.
Austen has been playing this game recently and is having a blast with it. One of the best Star Wars games of all time, Jedi Fallen Order is what you get when you combine star wars, the Arkham combat system, and Tomb Raider adventuring together in one fun game.
Comic of the week is Copperhead by Jay Faerber. A newly appointed Sharief is stated in a small town on a backwater planet. We follow her adventures as she deals with murder mysteries, corruption, and family problems in this comic that is very much a fun “space western”.
At the Movies with Trashed Talk Podcast: Our recommendations for the week are as follows:
Travis: The Mandalorian season 2, and Star Wars the Clone Wars animated movie.
Austen: The Wolf of Snow Hollow, and Black Christmas.
