This week, we celebrate the release fo the Final Fantasy VII Remake by covering one of the most beloved RPG franchises and talking about Final Fantasy matters. We break down how the original Final Fantasy VII shaped how we think about distribution, talk about best girls, how the franchise set the stage for RPG video games (even beyond JRPGs), and some of us make the claim that Final Fantasy XIV is the best of the series. Plus we do it all with the help of Grant from Gilmore Ball Z! It also wouldn’t be a Final Fantasy matters episode without talking about the television series and animated movies. This leads Kate to rank characters in terms of attractiveness and a good old softboi conversation.
With nearly over 30 years of history, there is a lot to cover. So, as always, we didn’t get it all, but we did get the fun stuff. If you’re unfamiliar with the series, Final Fantasy is a Japanese science-fantasy media franchise created by Hironobu Sakaguchi, and developed and owned by Square Enix. It has 15 main games, with world of other video games, trading card games, and series that extend from it, most notably Kingdom Hearts and SaGa.
