Forky Asks A Question continues after Forky (Tony Hale) spoke with Dolly (Bonnie Hunt) about What is a Leader?. Now, Forky seeks out the expertise of Officer Rib Tickles (Aloma Wright), whose partner, was Giggle McDimples introduced in the most recent installment of the series, Toy Story 4, about “What is a Pet?.” While Forky initially mistakes Rib for a pet, she is an officer of the law. However, despite this miscommunication, Officer Rib Tickles still helps Forky.
After explaining to Forky that pets are real animals, Officer Rib Tickles relays a traumatic story about Dragon, the cat who resides in the antique store from Toy Story 4. Rib details the terrifying moment she was swallowed and how she survived the ordeal. The segment features the show’s first foray into a completely different animation style. So far, Forky Asks A Question has featured fantastic 3D animation, something Pixar has revolutionized. However, the show has not showcased any real major set changes during the season. Seeing Rib’s story detailed through such wildly different stylization was an exciting change.
The story Rib detailed is entertaining but the focus of the episode is on her, not Forky. Additionally, Rib is not a character that has been seen before so its hard to be interested in her character since she has never been given a proper introduction. This episode would have been much stronger if it had featured Giggle McDimples instead. It is unclear exactly when this episode takes place since Dragon is featured at the very end making it seem like Forky is still in the antique shop.
Overall, the timeline of this series isn’t important nor really is continuity which is why the choice to consistently put Forky with lesser characters or in this case, completely unknown characters is disappointing. Forky Asks A Question excels when allows Forky to interact with well-known Toy Story characters. The series is fun but just has not been able to capture the magic of what made me fall in love with the character in Toy Story 4.
