Forky Asks A Question returns with another inquiry into a basic concept. Previously, Forky (Tony Hale), with Mr. Pricklepants, explored the concept of art in the best episode of the series to date. Now, in “What is Time?” Forky returns in an attempt to understand time, this time with the assistance of none of than…Rex the Dinosaur and not Old Timer (Alan Oppenheimer).
Upon seeing the thumbnail, I was expecting to be disappointed since Forky would once again not be interacting with a character I knew and loved. But I was immensely excited to find out he was instead going to be speaking with Rex. Rex the Dinosaur has been a staple within Toy Story since the first movie which debuted in 1995. To me, he is as much as a part of the franchise as Woody or Buzz.
Rex explains time in simple terms by saying what happened previously in the past while what hasn’t happened yet is the future. Rex’s explanation isn’t necessarily the focus of the episode. Instead, he spends most of it explaining to Forky about the age of the dinosaurs and reflecting on the when his kind, the tyrannosaurus rex, was the king of the world. Rex’s anxious energy is an interesting mix with Forky’s overall chaotic existence. The two are basically comedy gold as Forky is unable to grasp the devastating consequences of an asteroid.
Forky Asks A Question shines when Forky is able to interact with classic characters from the franchise. “What is Time?” leans hard on the heavy existential dread both Rex and Forky have experienced over the course of Toy Story’s various movies. This episode stays true to both characters. Additionally, “What is Time?” is able to blend its clever dialogue with physical humor from Forky, something previous episodes of Forky Asks A Question, especially the first one, struggled with.
While I am still not in love with the three-minute format, it is becoming less offensive to me as the episodes go on, especially considering how much better they are getting. As much as I loved the previous episode, “What is Time?” is now my favorite episode of the season because it encompasses everything I love about both Rex and Forky. As the season continues, the shorts have found their footing by placing Forky with well-loved and known Toy Story characters. It is less about answering questions and more about adding to the relationships and interactions that fans know and love the world of Toy Story for.
Episode four of Forky Asks A Question, “What is Time?” is streaming now on Disney+ with new episodes dropping weekly.
