REVIEW: ‘Forky Asks A Question’ Season 1, Episode 3 – What is Art?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

What is Art

Forky Asks A Question returns with its third episode of the season on Disney+, “What is Art?.” Previously, Forky (Tony Hale) spoke to a coffee mug and then, very briefly, Ham (John Ratzenberger) about what is a friend. The episode found Forky coming to conclusions of friendship after the coffee mug failed to speak up, understandably so. Now, in “What is Art?,” Forky speaks to Mr. Pricklepants (Timothy Dalton), the thespian hedgehog who was introduced to the series in Toy Story 3, about what is art.

Mr. Pricklepants describes art in a romanticized way, citing everything from sculpture, to music, and his case, acting. However, as predicted, Mr. Pricklepants’s eloquent definition leaves Forky a tad befuddled as he attempts to repeat back what was said. And while it is not exactly correct, Mr. Pricklepants is impressed by Forky’s ability to mimicry, one of the cornerstones of acting, and offers Forky acting lessons.

Forky Asks A Question shines when Forky is able to interact fully with other characters from the Toy Story series. That is very much the case in “What is Art?.” While the episode is still disappointingly short, clocking in at 3 minutes and 2 seconds with over a minute being dedicated to the intro and credits, “What is Art?” offers genuine interaction the first two episodes didn’t quite have. Additionally, Mr. Pricklepants is a highly underrated character and while very different from Forky, is just as eccentric. This episode lets him shine just as much as Forky. Their interactions together are hilarious and very heartwarming.

Overall, “What is Art?” is a positive direction for the series that showcases the brilliant writing that made fans fall in love with Toy Story to begin with. Forky Asks A Question has always had excellent animation quality, but without the signature dialogue, it never really felt like a part of the beloved franchise or like it even came from the minds of Pixar. Instead, it felt like a fast cash grab. While I still think the weekly release schedule is bizarre and the time stamp on each episode remains disappointing, “What is Art?” is a fun way to spend three minutes. For the first time since watching Forky Asks A Question, I don’t feel like I wasted my time.

Episode three of Forky Asks A Question, “What is Art?” is streaming now on Disney+ with new episodes dropping weekly.

  1. Many are saying it’s not really Timothy Dalton because there’s nothing about it on his IMDb page. Is it really him?
