REVIEW: ‘Forky Asks A Question’ Season 1, Episode 2 – What Is A Friend

Reading Time: 2 minutes

What Is a Friend

Forky Asks A Question returns with its second episode on Disney+, which still clocks in at around three minutes, “What Is a Friend?” Previously, Forky (Tony Hale) spoke to Ham (John Ratzenberger) about the intricacies of US currencies in “What Is Money?” and while he learned the bare bones of it, it is difficult to know exactly what anyone watching would learn or the point of the show which so far has episodes that are shorter than the actual Pixar shorts that debut in front of their movies.

In “What Is a Friend?,” Forky speaks to Bonnie’s mother’s smiley coffee cup whom he swears is named, “What? No!” since Bonnie’s mother always says that while carrying said mug. While in the world of Toy Story toys can talk and have complicated existential crises in the case of Forky it would appear, mugs cannot. Not realizing “What,? No!” is not a living creature, Forky, still determined to learn what is a friend, makes conclusions all on his own.

“What Is a Friend?” is a better episode than the previous one but the fact that Forky decides to ask an inanimate object about the meaning of friendship instead of an actual friend is disappointing. In Toy Story 4, Forky bonded with Woody and the other toys worked really hard to keep Forky safe in order to keep Bonnie happy. If the timeline of the episode matters, implying these episodes take place prior to Bonnie’s road trip and Woody going off on his own, then this could have been a great opportunity to elaborate on those relationships. However, that would probably also mean Disney would have to pay for voice acting that isn’t just Hale and Ratzenberger and even create scenes that aren’t just a table in Bonnie’s room.

Don’t get me wrong, the animation in Forky Asks A Question is fantastic and up to the Pixar standard, but you have to wonder how expensive it must be to produce these episodes if they are only three minutes and so far include two cast members from the original movie.

Overall, I can’t say that Forky Asks A Question is bad or a waste of time mostly because it is only three minutes long. However, I can still say it is highly disappointing, especially considering that so far the episodes ignore the amazing character growth Forky went through at the end of Toy Story 4.

Episode two of Forky Asks A Question, “What is a Friend?” is streaming now on Disney+.
