Reading Time: 6 minutes

NXT TakeOver: Toronto

We are only a few hours away from another chapter of NXT history. NXT TakeOver: Toronto is set to take place on Saturday with an incredible match card. If you’ve watched any TakeOver event before, you know that the superstars go above and beyond to deliver spectacular matches. Fans will see two former friends do battle, trying to prove that they don’t need one another. Two tag teams will fight over who will reign over the tag team division as champions. Lastly, a fierce rivalry between two of NXT’s top superstars will take part in a special Two-Out-of-Three falls match to be called champion. There’s no doubt that these matches will go above and beyond to deliver high-quality entertainment. Here’s a full breakdown of the match card and my own predictions for NXT TakeOver: Toronto.

Match Card and Predictions

NXT TakeOver: Toronto Candice LeRae vs. Io Shirai

Candice LeRae vs. Io Shirai

Former friends turned enemies will collide this Saturday as Le Rae wants revenge for Shirai’s betrayal. Back in June, Shirai took on Shayna Baszler for the NXT Women’s Championship in a Steel Cage match but lost. LeRae went inside the cage to protect her friend from any interference but Shirai lashed out at her. Shirai made it clear that she didn’t care for her friendship with LeRae and that she didn’t need help from anyone. Since then, the two have been at each other’s throats, wanting to prove who’s the best.

Predictions: This feud has been shaping up to be quite extraordinary. I’m suddenly taken back to feuds like the ones that Lita and Trish Stratus had. The storyline was set with weeks available for proper build-up. LeRae made a name for herself in the independent circuit as she took part in amazing matches. Io Shirai is the “Genius of the Sky” and was a finalist in the 2018 Mae Young Classic tournament. As far as choosing who to root for, I’m predicting that LeRae will win the match.

NXT TakeOver: Toronto NXT Women's Champion Shayna Baszler vs. Mia Yim

NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler vs. Mia Yim

Mia Yim looks to dethrone Shayna Baszler and become the NXT Women’s Champion at NXT TakeOver: Toronto. Baszler has ruled over the NXT women’s division with an iron fist alongside her friends Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke. However, everything changed once Yim decided to go after the champion. Yim quickly proved that she wasn’t afraid of Baszler or her friends. Baszler has always found ways to intimidate her opponents, but Yim is the first to not back down from her. It’ll be a hard-hitting fight as the Queen of Spades fights to retain her championship against the Head Baddie in Charge.

Predictions: Baszler has made quite an impact during her run as champion in NXT. She shows how much she’s improved in every match she wrestles. She’s quickly become one of the best heels that NXT has ever had. Yim knows what it takes to take on dangerous opponents. Her run in the independent circuit proves that she’s more than capable of carrying the NXT women’s division to new heights. I’m rooting for Yim to win the match. It’s time for Baszler to show the main roster just how dominant she can be.

NXT TakeOver: Toronto NXT North American Champion The Velveteen Dream vs. Pete Dunne vs. Roderick Strong

NXT North American Champion The Velveteen Dream vs. Pete Dunne vs. Roderick Strong

The Velveteen Dream is in for the fight of his life as he has to defend his North American Championship against the Bruiserweight Pete Dunne and Roderick Strong. Strong was in line for a title shot after pinning Dream in a six-man tag team match a few weeks ago. Things looked bright for the match between Dream and Strong until Dunne made his return to NXT on July 24th. Dunne moved back to NXT after a devastating loss against Walter that ended his monumental run as the NXT UK Champion. General Manager William Regal made the official decision to make change the stipulation to a triple threat match at NXT TakeOver: Toronto. This may very well be the match of the night that no fan of NXT will want to miss.

Predictions: This is the match that I’m most looking forward to seeing. The Dream has had a tremendous run as champion every since he defeated Johnny Gargano. He’s taken on the best of the best and has found a way to come out on top. Dunne fights hard and knows a lot about facing great odds. Strong’s victory in this match will be instrumental in 2019 being the year of the Undisputed Era. With all that being said, I’m rooting for Strong to win the match.

NXT TakeOver: Toronto NXT Tag Team Champions The Street Profits (Dawkins and Ford) vs. The Undisputed Era (O'Reilly and Fish)

NXT Tag Team Champions The Street Profits (Dawkins and Ford) vs. The Undisputed Era (O’Reilly and Fish)

The Sultans of Swagger look to continue their reign as champions but the Undisputed Era stands in their way. Dawkins and Ford won the Ladder match back at TakeOver: XXV and defeated three other teams, including O’Reilly and Fish. The Street Profits made their debut on RAW in a backstage segment after their championship win. Though they have yet to defend the titles, they’re looking forward to proving that win wasn’t a fluke. Meanwhile, the Undisputed Era is looking to fulfill the prophecy that Adam Cole made at the start of the year. Cole stated that 2019 will be the year that Undisputed Era will hold all the titles in the NXT Roster. A victory here means they’re one step closer to making that dream a reality.

Predictions: Watching The Forgotten Sons win the tag team championships was incredible. It’s one of those moments in NXT history that will surely be talked about for a long time. It’ll be a bit heartbreaking to see them lose those in their first title defense. However, it’s only a matter of time before Cole’s prophecy comes true. It’s a tough decision to make, but I’m rooting for the Undisputed Era to win.

NXT TakeOver: Toronto NXT Champion Adam Cole vs. Johnny Gargano

NXT Champion Adam Cole vs. Johnny Gargano

There’s a lot of bad blood between Johnny Gargano and Adam Cole. The two are no strangers to one another as they have faced each other twice before. Gargano beat Cole in a brutal Two-Out-of-Three falls match at NXT TakeOver: New York to become the new NXT Champion. Cole won their rematch at NXT TakeOver: XXV and became the new champion. Gargano is now out for retribution and wants to win back the biggest prize in the black and gold brand. However, Cole isn’t going to give up the title, especially if he wants his prophecy to come true. This Saturday, these two phenomenal athletes will be competing in another Two-Out-of-Three falls match but with an added stipulation. On the July 24th edition of NXT, it was announced that they would choose their own individual matches for each one fall. Gargano chose a Street Fight while Cole chose a traditional wrestling match. If they managed to tie, general manager William Regal will choose the final stipulation.

Predictions: This rivalry has been built up to be one that many fans of NXT will be talking about for a long time. On top of that, they’re wrestling in what’s essentially a Three Stages of Hell match which was quite common during WWE’s Attitude Era. It’s hard to determine who will walk out of NXT TakeOver: Toronto with the title. However, I’m rooting for Cole to retain his title. He needs a lengthy title run and I for one really do want to see if all members of Undisputed Era manage to hold championship belts before the end of the year.

Though there are only five matches, the event is stacked with tremendous athletes. This event will determine the atmosphere of NXT for the next few months. There’s no way that any fan of NXT will want to miss such an extraordinary event. NXT TakeOver: Toronto will be streaming exclusively on the WWE Network this Saturday at 7 pm ET / 4 pm PST.
