This past weekend I had the opportunity to attend my second Heroes and Villains Fan Fest event. I was able to meet some incredible people and attend most of the panels. One of the panels I attended was about one of the CW’s hit tv shows, The Flash featuring some of the actors from the show, Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow), Candice Patton (Iris West), and Harley Sawyer (Elongated Man), as the panelists. There was even a surprise appearance from fellow Flash alumni Robbie Amell (Ronnie Raymond).
This was one of the few times I had attended a panel like this. It wasn’t until this year that I started to get more interested in conventions. However, I knew that the opportunity to see the cast of one of my favorite shows talk about their experiences and possibly give out information on what’s to come was something I could not miss. The beginning of the panel was mainly an introduction to the show, the cast, and what they thought about the show so far. One of the panelists, Candice, was absent for the first half of the panel since she was running late.
After the introductory portion of the panel, the floor was open to for fans in the audience to ask questions. People asked all kinds of questions about the show, including how the metahuman prisoners that are inside the pipeline go to the bathroom, if Hartley’s character Ralph would get a love interest in future episodes, what other characters they would have played in the Arrowverse, whether or not Iris would be a speedster again, and how they felt about Tom Cavanaugh directing the 100th episode of the show. The cast even led the audience to sing happy birthday to a fellow attendee who had been going through health issues. That was definitely one of my favorite parts of the panels.
With the Elseworlds crossover event happening this upcoming weekend, it was obvious that the cast was going to get questions about the episodes. In case you missed the announcement or do not know when the crossover episodes are happening, The Flash would start the event on Sunday, followed by Arrow on Monday, and Supergirl on Tuesday. Danielle hinted that there would be some pretty incredible scenes during the last episode of the event. With Hartley being a huge comic book fan, he said that some of the scenes in the crossover event brought out his inner fan and made him excited. What he had to say about the scenes definitely got the audience excited.
When I heard the idea for his crossover, I got really really excited as a comic fan because to me it felt like something very special and like something I’d see in the comics. Remember how they do what if? Like if Hulk killed Wolverine. It felt like a special run of comic books. so it brough the eight and nine-year-old in me back. I think that’s why people love these. If you lose your inner child you lose everything.
Because the episodes haven’t aired yet and the fact that it’s such a monumental event, they obviously couldn’t really get into specifics. However, when a fan asked about Batwoman, played by actress Ruby Rose, Danielle revealed that she worked with Ruby in a couple of scenes. On this, she said, “I did get to work with Ruby on the crossovers and you guys are going to love it. That woman’s amazing.” She was also asked about her character of Killer Frost and whether she would play another character on any show if she were given the chance. Danielle said that she was happy to be Killer Frost, but also hinting at the audience to pay special attention to the Supergirl episode of the crossover. Which I’m assuming means that she’ll play a different version of Caitlin, or even a different character, which is definitely exciting.
One question that stood out to me as a writer was when a fan asked the panelists how much input on their characters’ actions. Hartley gave what I consider one of the best answers to that question, in which he gives all the credit to the writers.
“In terms of the direction of our characters, sometimes. There are so many hundreds of people who work behind the scenes to make the show that hopefully you love. A lot of the credit goes to the writers. This year more than any prior year, we are able to collaborate with the writers more but it’s ultimately the writers vision. It’s a team sport.”
Like I stated above, Robbie Amell, who played Ronnie Raymond during season 1 and 2 of the show, popped into the panel. He cleared up the rumors about him appearing in the crossover and said that he wasn’t in it. However, I do think I saw him in the promo for Tuesday night’s 100th episode. Having him there would be an added bonus to an already major episode. He also joked about him wanting to come back to life to be with Danielle’s character of Caitlin. Knowing how the Arrowverse has brought people back from the dead, I wouldn’t be surprised if they do something with his character in a future season.
Overall, I really enjoyed listening to what the panelists had to say. I can definitely see that they care for the fans and for the show itself. I’m quite interested to see how they handle Ralph’s love interest angle. It was revealed earlier this year that Danielle Panabaker would be directing an episode of the show, making her the first female director in the entire Arrowverse. I’m intrigued to see how that episode plays out. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s another Killer Frost / Icicle-Man centered episode. As I’m writing this piece, the 100th episode directed by Tom Cavanaugh will air tonight. I’ll be looking forward to the episode and have full faith he put together an amazing episode.
Make sure you catch The Flash on the CW Network every Tuesday at 8 pm PST / 5 pm EST.
