Survivor Series, WWE’s annual event, is happing this Sunday. Last year’s event was quite exciting, except for the way the main event ended. Countless memorable moments have been created since the establishment of this event back in 1990. Who could forget the first ever Elimination Chamber match, Sting making his WWE, the end of the “Invasion,” Goldberg beating Brock Lesnar in a matter of seconds, or The Undertaker’s debut? All of these moments live in the memories of countless wrestling fans. This year’s event marks the 28th anniversary, and will no doubt create even more memorable moments.
Universal Champion Brock Lesnar vs WWE Champion Daniel Bryan
Earlier this week, Daniel Bryan beat AJ Styles for the WWE Championship. His victory shocked the world, especially since it alluded to him turning heel with the way that the match ended. Originally, the match was supposed to be AJ Styles vs Brock Lesnar. However, like what happened last year with Jinder Mahal, the WWE Champion changed hands, which sets up a new match. Bryan has been talking about this match for years. Many fans, including myself, wanted to see Bryan vs Lesnar at Wrestlemania 31. His dream match is now a reality as he’s set to take on one of the toughest superstars in the WWE today.
Prediction: I can’t help but think of all of Bryan’s injuries. He was forced to retire back in 2016 due to numerous injuries. He fought hard to come back to wrestle and accomplished his goal. But Brock Lesnar is notoriously known for not showing any care for his opponents. Back in 2016, he fought against Randy Orton. During their match, Lesnar took off his gloves and began punching Orton’s head, which caused Orton to bleed. Lesnar has had other matches were he’s ignored directions or caused harm to others intentionally. I’m not quite sure this was a good choice, but I can only hope nothing bad happens. With that in mind, I’m rooting for Bryan to win. If he manages to pick up a win, this could propel him to even bigger heights.
RAW Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey vs Charlotte Flair
After Evolution, all the signs were leading up to a confrontation between Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey at Survivor Series. Both of these women had been going after each other in promos on live TV and even took their feud to social media. Fans were very excited to see their confrontation, especially after all of the popularity the Becky has gotten since SummerSlam. Earlier this week, the Smackdown LIVE women’s division invaded RAW, with Becky Lynch leading them. They began to attack several of the women and Becky managed to get Ronda into her submission hold called the “Disarm-her”. Becky made her way to the ring to join her fellow brand-mates. Unfortunately, while brawling with Nia Jax, Nia punched Becky straight in the face. Becky went down for a few seconds, checking her nose. Several women were still fighting around her as she started getting up. Once she was up, her face was covered in blood. She didn’t let that affect her and continued to fight. She grabbed a steel chair and began to viciously attack Ronda Rousey. The crowd erupted with every blow that Becky inflicted. Becky led her group out of the arena through the stands, looking back at Ronda in the ring.
The following day, reports had started to come in saying that the punch had broken Becky’s nose, meaning that she wouldn’t be able to compete on Sunday. It was later confirmed on Smackdown LIVE that the match was canceled. Becky chose her former rival Charlotte Flair to take her place in the match. The match between Charlotte and Ronda was made official following that announcement.
Prediction: I was really looking forward to the match between Ronda and Becky. Becky has gotten over with the crowd despite being made to be a heel. That’s not something that can easily be accomplished. There are rumors of the possibility that their match will still take place, but will now be held at the main event at next year’s Wrestlemania. However, it’s never a good idea to take these reports that seriously. After Becky was taken out of the event, Twitter exploded with so many comments on the situation. It’s unfortunate how much hate Nia was getting sent her way. But regardless, Becky walked away looking like an even bigger badass and got even more over with the entire WWE Universe. In terms of the match, it has the potential to set up the Four Horsewomen of WWE vs the Four Horsewomen of MMA feud, which is definitely exciting. But I’m predicting that Ronda Rousey will win the match.
Intercontinental Champion Seth Rollins vs United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura
A match that has to potential to steal the show, the current Intercontinental Champion Seth Rollins takes on The U.S. Champion Shinsuke Nakamura. This is a dream match that will definitely leave many wrestling fans speechless. Rollins has made a name for himself in WWE in just a few years. Even before his time in WWE when he went by the name of Tyler Black, he took the indie world by storm. Nakamura’s time in New Japan Pro Wrestling can only be described as legendary. His match against AJ Styles at Wrestle Kingdom 10 is still one of my favorite matches of all time. They will both be looking to prove who the best champion in the WWE is, but only one will be victorious.
Prediction: With the announcement that Becky Lynch wouldn’t be competing, my timeline on Twitter was full of comments like “Well, there goes the match of the night”. While I do think that match would have been the match of the night, I don’t think those types of comments are necessary. However, given the feud between Nakamura and Styles that started at this year’s Wrestlemania, I’m hesitant to get my hopes up. But I’m still very much excited to see how this match plays out. I’m torn on choosing who I’d think will win, but my pick would have to be Shinsuke Nakamura.
5-on-5 Men’s Survivor Series Elimination Match
The traditional 5-on-5 Men’s Survivor Series Elimination Match is packed with incredible talent this year. Acting General Manager of RAW Baron Corbin named himself team captain, even though he isn’t competing. His first two picks to represent RAW were, Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler. They’re been tag team partners since the start of the summer and have been a dominant force. His third pick was the monster among men, Braun Strowman. This was a bit of a shock since Baron was the one who interfered in Braun’s match against Brock Lesnar that was for the Universal Title a few weeks ago. Earlier this week, Commissioner Stephanie McMahon named Finn Balor as the third member of the RAW team after he beat Dolph Ziggler. The final member, Bobby Lashley, was added after he beat Elias in a single’s match. For the Smackdown LIVE brand, Shane McMahon and General Manager Paige named Daniel Bryan as co-captains of the team. Given their heated rivalry, it was a bit rough for them to get used to the idea that they would be co-captains. But they put aside their differences and agreed that Shane would be the third member. Rey Mysterio and Samoa Joe were chosen to be the final members after their respective victories against Andrade “Cien” Almas and Jeff Hardy. However, since Bryan won the WWE Championship earlier this week, Miz became the main captain of the team. He sought of Jeff Hardy to join be the final member.
Prediction: It’s unfortunate, but this match has been poorly booked. The main reason is that they had two PPVs in the same week to prepare for. The event that they had in November, which I refuse to even name, cut the time that they could’ve used to add momentum to the match. There’s no doubt that these superstars can carry a match, but if they hadn’t rushed the booking, it could’ve been an even greater match. That being said, I’m rooting for the Smackdown LIVE team to win, even though Shane is in the match again this year. There are so many other wrestlers I would’ve loved to see in the match other than him.
5-on-5 Women’s Survivor Series Elimination Match
Like the men, the women’s divisions of both RAW and Smackdown LIVE will participate in a 5-on-5 Survivor Series Elimination Match. A few weeks ago, Alexa Bliss was named the captain of the RAW team, but will not be able to participate since she is still recovering from her injury. A week later, Alexa announced that Mickie James, Nia Jax, Natalia, Tamina, and Ruby Riot will represent the RAW brand.
With the Smackdown LIVE team, General Manager Paige announced that Carmella, Asuka, Naiomi, Sonya Deville, and Charlotte Flair would represent the blue brand. However, with Becky Lynch no longer being able to compete, she chose Charlotte to take her place in the match against Ronda Rousey. That means that the final member of the Smackdown LIVE brand will be announced the day of the event.
Prediction: I said the same thing with the men’s elimination match, but one of the downsides of having 2 PPV’s in the same week was that there couldn’t be a strong booking for this match. All of these women are extremely talented, but the booking just made me not really care for the match. What does interest me is who the final member of the Smackdown LIVE team will be. I’m hoping that Nikki Cross is added to the team. She debuted last week in a match against Becky Lynch. She’s gained a lot of momentum during her solo run in NXT after the rest of SAnitY was called up to the main roster without her. It’ll also be interesting to see what the crowd reaction to the match is like. With everything that happened this week during the invasion storyline, I’m hoping the crowd doesn’t let that distract them from what looks like a pretty good match. I’m predicting that the Smackdown LIVE team wins the match.
RAW Tag Team Champions “The Authors of Pain” vs Smackdown Tag Team Champions “The Bar” (w/ The Big Show)
The tag team divisions from RAW and Smackdown LIVE will once again go to war. Last year, we saw an incredible match between The Usos and The Bar. This year, The Authors of Pain (Akam and Rezar) look to prove that they’re the dominant champions against The Bar (Sheamus and Cesaro). AOP beat the former RAW tag team champion Seth Rollins last week in a 2-on-1 tag team match since Seth’s partner Dean walked out on Rollins when they became champions. The Bar, with the help of The Big Show, defeated The New Day to become the Smackdown LIVE tag team champions. All four of these superstars can be considered powerhouses on their own, so it’ll be interesting to see how this match plays out.
Prediction: This is a match that I didn’t know I wanted until it got announced. Cesaro and Sheamus are incredible superstars and have shown that they are great tag team partners. Sure, their partnership originated from their best-of-seven match rivalry, but they have great chemistry as tag partners. That being said, I would love to see both of them have their perspective world championship run. The Authors of Pain quickly rose up the ranks in NXT, proving just how dominant of a tag team they are. Their match against #DIY is still one of the greatest tag team matches I’ve ever seen. It’s no surprise that they are now the face of the RAW tag team division. I’m honestly torn on who to pick. However, I think AOP have the most to benefit from a victory. My pick for the match goes to The Authors of Pain.
Cruiserweight Champion Buddy Murphy vs Mustafa Ali
Last month at the SuperShowdown PPV, Buddy Murphy defeated Cedric Alexander and became the new Cruiserweight champion. The crowd reaction for his victory was by far one of the best crowd reactions I’ve seen this year. His victory had a much bigger impact in the cruiserweight division since he was the first superstar to beat Alexander in 2018. On an episode of 205 Live, general manager Drake Maverick said that Cedric wasn’t living up to his expectations and decided to not give him a rematch for the title. Instead, a match between Tony Nese and Mustafa Ali was held to determine who would be the number one contender for Murphy’s title. After what I consider one of the best matches I’ve seen in the cruiserweight division, Ali beat Tony and was set to challenge the champion.
Prediction: Buddy and Ali are no strangers to one another. They’ve wrestled in matches against each other before. One of their most memorable fights was a No Disqualification match that happened a few months ago. The crowd reaction that Buddy got from his win last month was incredible. Mustafa Ali is an amazing wrestler, but I think Buddy deserves an opportunity to have a longer reign. I’m predicting that Buddy retains his title.
10-on-10 Tag Team Traditional Survivor Series Elimination Match – KICKOFF SHOW MATCH
This year’s Survivor Series kickoff show will include this historic 10-on-10 tag team elimination match. A few weeks back, The Usos (Jimmy and Jey Usos) had a match against The New Day (Big E and Kofi Kingston) to determine who would be the captains of the Smackdown LIVE team. The Usos won that match but they automatically chose The New Day to be a part of their team, saying that there “isn’t a Smackdown LIVE tag team division without The Usos or The New Day.” The following week, they sought out The Good Brothers (Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows,) SAnitY (Eric Young, Alexander Wolfe, and Killian Dane,) and The Colons (Epico and Primo Colon) to join their team. As for team RAW, a tag team battle royal was held to determine who would captain their team. The winners of that battle royal were Bobby Roode and Chad Gable, who will captain the team of The Ascension (Konnor and Viktor,) The B Team (Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel,) The Revival (Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson,) and the Lucha House Party (Kalisto, Lince Dorado, and Gran Metalik.)
Prediction: It’s a shame that this match is being put into the kickoff show. The Usos and New Day have proved countless times that they should be on the main match card during PPV shows. The Good Brothers (formerly knowns as The Club) have enough credibility from their time in Japan to be top faces of the tag team division on either brand. SAnitY were a dominant force during their time in NXT. Unfortunately, they’ve suffered from what a lot of other NXT calls-ups go through. They are put in dark matches or are used for house shows. Other than last week, it’s rare for SAnitY to show up on a live episode of Smackdown LIVE. Other than The Revival and the team of Bobby Roode and Chad Gable, I can’t say I care for anyone on the RAW team. The Authors of Pain would’ve been a great addition to the match, but they’re in another match. I don’t really care about this match because nothing in this is particularly exciting. That being said, it would be a shame for the Smackdown LIVE team to lose this match. I’m predicting that team Smackdown LIVE will be the winners of the match.
Regardless of the events have transpired this week, Survivor Series is shaping up to be an action-packed event. This is an event that wrestling fans will definitely not want to miss. Make sure you don’t miss out of the event, which starts at 7 ET/4 PT on the WWE Network.
