Marvel’s Spider-Man for the PS4 is set to release on September 7 of this year and, with game footage and trailers from San Diego Comic-Con and E3’s conference, there’s a lot of speculation as to what the plot is of the game will be about.
In a recent tweet, Insomniac Games announced the upcoming Spider-Man game’s completion for the PS4 was announced in the best way possible on the internet – with a meme. Completion of this game means it will release on schedule and that we are one step closer to finally playing our favorite neighborhood hero.
We are pleased to announce that #SpiderManPS4 has GONE GOLD for its worldwide release on September 7th. Thanks to @PlayStation and @MarvelGames for their support in the creation of this original Spider-Man adventure. pic.twitter.com/iD4mJmqGfK
Spider-Man was one of the biggest parts of PlayStation’s showcase in E3’s 2018 conference. This game will feature battles with iconic villains such as Rhino, Mister Negative, Vulture, Scorpio, and Electro. There’s also a hint that Spider-Man will have to fight a sixth mystery villain. The footage conveniently cut off before we were able to see but I have my theories.
There have been several fan theories about who the mystery villain is that Spider-Man sees (IGN has a few great ones here). The obvious theory is that the mysterious villain is the Green Goblin. It would be a great homage to the first Spider-Man game that came out in 2002. Also, the Green Goblin is the leader of the Sinister Six in some Spider-Man comic variations, though Dr. Octopus was the original leader. While the villains we see in this game don’t explicitly call themselves this, I’m willing to bet it’s what they are gearing toward.
I’m putting all of my eggs in the Green Goblin basket because he is my favorite Spidey villain. Norman Osborn is very rich so there’s a large chance he was able to afford all of those various suit upgrades for each villain. This isn’t the first time the Green Goblin and the Vulture were in the same game together, either. The original Spider-Man game featured Vulture as a villain in conjunction with the Green Goblin. But why the Green Goblin?
In the game, Norman Osborn is up for re-election in New York and trailers hint at a working relationship between Kingpin and Osborn. Kingpin gets taken out early in the game and sets up the plot of how Peter Parker will have to battle multiple villains at once. It doesn’t look like Kingpin is in the exclusive villain group shown in Sony’s E3 showcase video so that tells me he was no longer needed to further Osborn’s agenda – whatever that may be. If Norman Osborn is in this game, I have to believe that we will see the Green Goblin in SOME capacity.
The plot will feature an older and more experienced Peter Parker. He is 23-years-old and is interning at a lab before graduating college.
“After eight years behind the mask, Peter Parker is a crime-fighting master. Feel the full power of a more experienced Spider-Man with improvisational combat, dynamic acrobatics, fluid urban traversal, and environmental interactions. A rookie no longer, this is the most masterful Spider-Man you’ve ever played.” (via Insomniac Games)
The game starts with him defeating Wilson Fisk (Kingpin) and learning about a new gang called the Inner Demons. Martin Li, who is a New York philanthropist and works with Aunt May, leads this gang under his alter ego Mister Negative.
When the game comes out, I’ll be most excited to play an older and more mature Peter Parker. This game will deal with Peter’s issues of surviving through college and trying to make ends meet on top of keeping New York City safe. Peter Parker’s adult struggles in his personal life make him a more relatable character. But, in true Peter Parker form, he will still have his quick wit and dry jokes.
Based on the teaser trailer, we might get an opportunity to see Miles Morales take the Spider-Man mantle or at least have a potential sequel with him taking over the Spidey Suit. This is pure speculation on my end and there’s a good chance that it won’t happen but a girl can dream.
If you are not familiar with Morales’ character: Miles Morales was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli out of inspiration from President Barack Obama and Donald Glover (name a more iconic duo). In the comics, Morales takes over as Spider-Man after Peter Parker’s death and possesses powers similar to Parker’s. However, Morales has two additional benefits that Parker never had – he can camouflage himself and has a venom strike that paralysis his enemies with just a touch. If we get to play as Morales’ Spider-Man in the new game, I’m curious to see if we will get to have those powers.
Spider-Man is an action-adventure game that is not tied to previous comic books or movies (though there will be a few mentions about the Avengers). It is set in a modern-day open-world New York City with a third-person perspective. Based on gameplay from previous comic-cons and conferences, Peter Parker will be playable outside of his suit and you will play Mary Jane Watson in “key moments” of the game.
“The Big Apple comes to life as Insomniac’s most expansive and interactive world yet. Swing through vibrant neighborhoods and catch breathtaking views of iconic Marvel and Manhattan landmarks. Use the environment to defeat villains with epic takedowns in true blockbuster action.” (via Insomniac Games)
Since this is an open-world game, there’s a chance we will get to explore New York City in a greater capacity as compared to the original Spider-Man games. Previous versions of this game only featured level based gameplay with some levels being outdoors and others being inside. Anyone remember only being able to land on skyscrapers and dying if you tried to get to the streets? We had it rough growing up.
With the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man, you can also get a Spider-Man themed PS4 Pro bundle. This includes a decked out 1TB PS4 Pro console and the game itself. September 7 cannot come here fast enough.
