Comic Con 2018 is currently underway and a lot of trailers and information about our favorite franchises has been released. Yesterday, fans of the Arrowverse were given new trailers for the upcoming seasons of The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow. Even though the shows have just started filming this month, we were able to get some decent trailers. I am really excited to see where these shows will go. I’m hoping to see an improvement in The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl since the most recent seasons haven’t been that great. I wanted to get my reviews for the trailers and overall excitement.
Supergirl (Season 4)
Most of the trailer is a recap of what happened in season 3 since Melissa Benoist is currently performing in a play on Broadway. They may have shot some scenes with her already but they were probably not ready to be included in the trailer. She isn’t expected to be back shooting in Vancouver until early August. That’s possibly also why the new scenes that were shown had a lot of secondary characters. This doesn’t mean they aren’t important, but they won’t have the same important scenes that Supergirl would have. However, we do get the voice overlay of Agent Liberty, who is being played by Sam Witwer. Some of you may already know Witwer since he’s been a staple in the Star Wars universe as Starkiller in The Force Unleashed video game series and was most recently the voice of Darth Maul in Star Wars: Rebels and most recently Solo: A Star Wars Story, but he also appeared in later seasons of the original DCTV show: Smallville.
I’m glad that they went with the voice over because it adds an element of mystery and darkness we haven’t seen before. I really do like this trailer and I am confident in saying that it’s far better than any of the previous season trailers shown in the past. It seemed like the previous season trailers lacked an overall narrative. Even though they didn’t show a lot of new footage, I thought that the voice over conveyed what it needed to and it gave us a sneak peek of the tone that the season will have. We only get a shot of Agent Liberty but he’s in the mask, which gives him more of a villainous vibe.
In the show, he will most likely be a founder of a hate group called The Children of Liberty, which is a group that supports a human-first world order. The most interesting part of the trailer for me is the last scene in which Supergirl is in a suit that has a helmet piece. She’s supposed to be wearing it for the first two episodes. It’s being rumored that she’s wearing this suit as a form of protection since she has been hit by Kryptonite. Lena’s supposed to make this suit for her while she battles the villain who uses kryptonite. It may change or at least look different since the person in that suit is not Benoist. Overall, I this trailer has set it up to be the best season since the last three seasons were a total mess.
Supergirl’s fourth season premiers on, Sunday October 14th.
The Flash (Season 5)
I want to start off jus by saying that I am so excited that they’ll actually use the Flash ring this season. We got a tease during the penultimate episode of season 1 when Eobard Thawne used his, but this is the first time Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) will use one. The trailer starts off with a quick recap of the end scene from season 4, where Barry and Iris’ daughter Nora (Jessica Parker Kennedy) shows up in their front steps asking them for help to fix her giant mistake. It picks right up with one of Cisco’s funny bits to ease the tension – one of the things I love about the show. Nora goes on to reveal more information about herself, like how she calls herself Excess, which was a named that Barry gave her when she was a kid.
The first few episodes will probably be about Barry and Iris (Candice Patton) adapting to having their daughter with them and trying to find out what her mistake is. It’s also been revealed that Nora will be more “clingy” towards Barry and more distant towards Iris. Hope they can tackle that more in-depth. I’m glad that Hartley Sawyer, who plays Ralph Dibny, has been promoted to a series regular. It was reported that Keiynan Lonsdale was not returning to the Arrowverse this season but it appears that he will at least be in the first episode helping Barry and Nora fight off the villain. Seeing Barry and Nora run side by side gave me the chills.
She gives him the ring, saying that it’s a “fan favorite”. The mood quickly shifts to a much darker atmosphere, which shows Cicada watching the news report on The Flash saving the city from The Thinker’s attack. Cicada is being played by Chris Klein, who is most famous for being in the American Pie series. I love the shots of Cicada walking in slowly and breathing heavily. It adds more suspense to the scene, which I can appreciate. The last two shots that we get are of Cicada’s lightning dagger and of him wearing his mask.
If you’re unfamiliar with the character of Cicada, you can read The Flash Vol 2 #170, which was written by Geoff Johns. Or, you can click HERE for information about his character. He was supposed to be added in the season 4 but they decided to cut the scene out. I’m assuming that this was the scene that they were going to show. Either way, this is already looking like a way better season than the one that just ended. I’m not sure if Cicada will be the main villain since there are rumors that Cobalt Blue is supposed to show up this season, but if he is, I’m confident that he will be a far better villain that The Thinker.
The Flash’s fifth season premiers on Tuesday, October October 9th. It will also reach its 100 episode milestone this season.
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (Season 4)
Most of the trailer, like Supergirl’s. It has a lot of recap information from season 3. After their cuddly and ferocious battle against Mallus, the Legends were ready to take a break from all their adventures and take a break. However, John Constantine (played by Matt Ryan) tells them that Mallus wasn’t the only dark entity that was released. This season, the Legends will battle against “Fugitives,” which are magical creatures or beings from myths, fairytales, and legends. These fugitives are coming to present-day life to wreak havoc upon the world.
New members will be joining the show, such as Ramona Young and Tom Wilson. Ramona will be playing Alaska Yu, who is an expert on fairy tales and myths. She’ll most likely help the team deal with the fugitives. Some of you may recognize Ramona from Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet or from the movie Blockers. Tom Wilson will be playing as Nate’s father, Hank Heywood. A lot of you will recognize Wilson since he had the iconic role of Biff Tannen in the Back to the Future trilogy.
Season 3 of Legends was by far my favorite season that the show has done. It is also my favorite season out of all the other Arrowverse seasons that went on during 2017-2018. It was a much more grounded season but it also showed me that all of these characters, if given a chance, could shine and be amazing. I’m very happy that they brought on Constantine and made him a series regular. He deserves his own show, or at least to have his previous show to be picked up. I guess I’ll settle for him being a part of the team. Hope he can stay on for a few seasons. But even though the Legends won’t be a part of the annual crossover event that the CW does, I know that this season will be great. After all, each season of this show has been getting better and better. It’s definitely better than season 1.
Legends of Tomorrow’s fourth season premiers on Monday, October 22nd!
Arrow (Season 7)
I want to personally thank whoever edited the trailer and bring them cookies. This isn’t something new, but the way that they edited the music to fit with Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) punching the other prisoners was fantastic. Last time we saw Oliver, he was being put in Slabside Maximum Security Prison for his crimes of vigilantism as the Green Arrow. Most of the first few episodes will have Oliver stay in the prison. We know that he will be either broken out of prison or released since the crossover event will take place in Gotham city and the main characters from Arrow will be in it. During his time in prison, Oliver will go up against a lot of the people that he put there.
A few of the villains that appeared in the prison are Michael Jai White as Ben Turner/Bronze Tiger, Cody Runnels (Rhodes) as Derek Sampson and Vinnie Jones as Danny “Brick” Brickwell. It will be interesting to see how Oliver adapts to his new environment and the fact that he’s in prison with people who now know he’s the Green Arrow. It’s also been revealed that a mysterious new enemy will begin to unravel his previous work as Green Arrow, which will challenge him to redeem his name or risk losing everything. This may be referring to the hooded vigilante from the trailer, which would imply that they are a member of the Longbow Hunters. This group was teased during the season finale of Arrow season 6. Ricardo Diaz (Kirk Acevedo) said he had hired them to be a part of his team. The four of them will be the main villains of the season, which I’m definitely excited to see.
The Longbow Hunters is one of my favorite story arcs, which is fairly new since the team debuted in 2014. In the show, the hunters are being by Holly Elissa, Michael Jonsson, and Miranda Edwards. Holly, who is known for being on a show called Whistler, will play as Red Dart, who is described as a ruthless and precise killer. Michael Jonsson, known for being in the show Van Helsing, will play as Kodiak, who is described as a beast-like man with brute force. Miranda Edwards, known for being in several tv shows like The Magicians and Orphan Black, will play as Silencer, a master of stealth. Even though the team in the comics has different members, I’m still happy to see them being a part of the show. I’m excited to see how the hunters will look like and what the overall season will show. Also, the book that Oliver is reading while in prison is called The Count of Monte Cristo, which is written by Alexandre Dumas. It is one of my favorite books, mainly because it has to do with a strategic plan for revenge. I wouldn’t be surprised if they put that book in there to foreshadow something.
Arrow’s seventh season will premier on Monday, October 15th!
Overall, it looks like we are in for a fantastic 2018-2019 season for these shows. I hope that they made some improvements to these shows and added a lot of exciting new things that fans, like myself, will love. Plus, we are getting an introduction to Batwoman and Gotham City! So make sure you mark your calendars and get ready for what will hopefully be some great entertainment.
