The heart of The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has always been Tony Stark. He has been there from the very beginning and experienced almost every insane thing that has happened. He exemplifies the things that make a true hero, but he also has realistic characteristics and problems that make him and his journey resonate with so many people, myself included. He struggles with mental health, self-hate, and insurmountable guilt. While most would collapse under the weight of all of this, he takes the pain, the guilt, and the anxiety and he uses it as fuel to do something good. He is in my opinion, the perfect Superhero.
Watching his journey throughout the MCU has been a pleasure, and while I never want the character to go away I know that it’s only a matter of time before we have to say goodbye to Robert Downey Jr and Iron Man. When that day comes I hope they are able to give him a worthy send-off that is true to his character. I hope they don’t kill him off just for the sake of killing him off, but if they do decide to have him die, I want his death to means something, not just for the characters that are close to him, but for the entire MCU.
My ideal Iron Man send off is that he retires. He just marries Pepper Potts and has that kid he was dreaming about in Avengers: Infinity War. After everything Tony Stark has been through I think he deserves a peaceful departure. Since Avengers: Age Of Ultron we have seen glimpses of Tony’s desire to settle down and get out of the game. In Captain America: Civil War, he’s an “Active Duty Non-Combatant” and in Spider-Man: Homecoming he seems to be mostly be retired. While I could totally see this happening, given the MCU’s track record of destroying Tony Stark at every turn I don’t think they’re going to let him just walk peacefully off into the sunset.
I think its more likely that he is going to die in Avengers 4. Imagine, one final battle with Thanos where he sacrifices himself to save the universe (preferably wielding the Infinity Gauntlet) and the fabric of the MCU would be changed forever and the next Avengers film could be about the team learning to go on without the man that started everything. As much as I don’t want Tony to die I think this would be a great story.
I could be totally off base with these predictions, Marvel has a history of going left when I think they’re going to go right. I really hope I’m wrong and they do something completely unpredictable with Tony Stark, but wherever they go and whatever they do, I am so grateful that this Genius, Billionaire, Playboy, Philanthropist has been apart of my life for the last ten years and I will never forget him.
